Your maps: Trash, backups and the maps folder

Guide 9 of 10 · 2 min read

The home screen lists every map on this PC. This guide covers finding them, getting deleted ones back and keeping everything safe.

Find and organize maps

Trash

Clicking 🗑 on a site card moves the map to the Trash. Nothing is lost.

  1. Click Trash at the bottom of the home screen.
  2. Click Restore next to the map you want back.

Empty Trash… deletes everything in the Trash for good. This can't be undone.

Back up all maps

  1. Click Back up all maps… at the bottom of the home screen.
  2. Choose where to save the backup. It is one .zip file named with today's date.

The backup holds all your maps, your client list, your custom camera models and your settings. It never includes your Google Maps or Claude keys.

Tip Keep a copy of the backup somewhere other than this PC, such as OneDrive or a USB drive.

Restore from backup

  1. Click Restore from backup… and pick the backup .zip file.
  2. Click Restore.

Restoring never loses a map. Maps that aren't on this PC are added. Where both have the same map, the newer copy is kept, and an older copy on this PC goes to the Trash first. You can restore on this PC or on a new one.

Change where maps are kept

Your maps are kept in Documents\SightLine Maps unless you choose another folder. The bottom of the home screen shows the current folder, and Open folder opens it in File Explorer.

  1. Click Change folder… and choose a folder, for example in OneDrive or on a network drive.
  2. If the folder is empty, SightLine copies your maps there. If it already has SightLine maps, SightLine switches to them.
  3. Confirm, and SightLine restarts using the new folder.

The old folder is left as it is, so nothing is lost. You can delete it yourself later.

Note If the chosen folder can't be found when SightLine starts (for example a USB or network drive that isn't connected), SightLine asks you to Try again, Use the default folder or Quit. It never swaps in an empty folder without asking.
